Dave has built up a 33 mile lead on the 4 teams behind him. Go Dave!
The Gang departed Central in 12th palce, minutes behind Brian Wilmshurst and Rob Cooke at 6:59 this morning. Dave has passed both of those teams and is hanging on to a very small lead as they approach Mile 101. Looks like Dave, Brian, Rob, Ben, Sebastien, and Gaetan will be racing for the #10 spot as they close in on Fairbanks!
Dave and the Gang are resting Central at mile 810. 11 Dogs strong, Dave’s now in the #10 spot, arriving 12:30 AK time today.
Kirsten and Beth spent the day preparing the Gang’s digs in Dawson City. Quest rules allow mushers to delegate dog care to handlers during the 36 hour layover. Teams are allowed to rest in open air shelters and receive thorough care from mushers, handlers and the vet team. Dave will rest, shower!, eat pizza, drink beer, and thaw his gear out for the second half of the race. Expect the gang to arrive after 9pm pst!
Dave and the Gang are currently at mile 305 on the Quest Trail. Word from Kirsten is that he rested at Stepping Stone, and plans to break at Scroggie as well before heading to Dawson. Given the inexperience and younger age of this years Gang, Dave’s mission this year is to keep his young team well rested and attitudes up. For comparison, competitive teams leading the pack have rested only 9-11 hours so far. Dave and the Gang have accumulated almost 24 hours on downtown thus far. Expect more of that, and perhaps a small push at the end. Kirsten and Beth expect Dave and the Gang tomorrow afternoon. This year, the ice-bridge connected Dawson with the campground has been relocated to detour open water on the Yukon River.
